28 oz is enough to hold a lunch for me; I primary use it to keep food warm. If you warm the jar with hot water first, it keeps warm for longer period of time

My kids use it all the time to take a hot lunch to school. They aren’t allowed to use microwaves at school, so this is perfect for any type of food and keeps it very hot. My kids bring soup, noodles, chicken, practically any type of food they want. They always tell me their food was hot when they opened it for lunch, typically around a 3 hour hold time for lunch.
